Jewellers insurance news - French robbery to result in huge claim

13 June 2010

A French jewellers insurance company has braced itself for one of the most expensive jewellers insurance theft claims in the country's history after armed robbers made off with £5.5 million worth of gold jewellery from a French wholesaler.

Police have been left without any clues following the raid, which they have described as meticulously planned and seamlessly carried out.

One police officer commented, "We've never seen anything like it. This was an extremely professional job."

Initially, the robbers accosted the jewel dealer while he was driving his Mercedes. They then took him to his house, where they held the man's wife and two children under house arrest.

On learning that the owner did not have all the necessary security codes for breaking into the company safe, they took him to his place of work where they then tied up and tortured 27 workers until they had managed to discover the codes.

Once they had done this, they wiped down all surfaces with methylated spirits, so as to leave no trace of DNA, and made a quick getaway.

It is likely that, unless the stock is recovered, the dealer's jewellers insurance provider will soon be facing a claim for the full £5.5 million of stolen stock, in addition to sums for property damage and personal assault to staff.
