Jeweller's insurance likely to recover damages and loss of stock after armed gang's raid

11 August 2009

Jewellers in Tyneside are likely to be claiming on their jeweller's insurance after armed robbers stormed their shop in broad daylight.

The Estonian gang have been travelling across the country targeting luxury goldsmiths in their attacks. They terrorised staff at the Newcastle jewellers, brandishing a gun before escaping with watches worth more than £130,000.

However, when the gang tried to coordinate a similar attack in Windsor, Berkshire, they were caught by police officers who caught them as they tried to flee down the street.

The 23-year-old gang leader was handed an 11-year jail sentence after CCTV footage linked him with the terrifying Newcastle raid. He admitted robbery and possession of an imitation firearm at his trial in Reading Crown Court.

The jewellery shop should be able to claim for the damage caused to the shop by the robbers, and for the loss of goods, on their jewellers insurance.
